Rose CottageRose CottageAt the end of February on yet another stormy weekend an art show was held at the old Baptist church in Bar Mills.  The weather was fitting for the show titled “A Winter’s Worth”.  The paintings gave a glimpse of  local scenes blanketed with  a winter’s coat.  You can check out these paintings and others at the artist’s web site www.janeryanart.com.

One painting in particular caught my eye  - Rose Cottage, a small cape nestled between two larger homes on the banks of the Saco River.  I’ve never lived in this home but feel a connection because this was my first listing when I began my real estate career.

With all the recent news about the real estate market and falling property values one side of the story is not heard.  The human side.  It’s easy to forget that for most of us real estate is more than an investment.  It is the place where we make memories.  Our home becomes part of our identity, part of who we are.  When a for sale sign is put on the front lawn there is a story behind that decision.  In the best of circumstances it’s to move on to an anticipated and welcomed change.  But for others the change is thrust upon them by life’s circumstances.

As a real estate broker I become privy to the  stories behind the signs and often find myself being a confidant as well as  a business partner.  I hadn’t anticipated this role when I listed the rose cottage but I’ve come to see that this is part of what I do.  The people become part of my story.

Something historical is going on in Hollis right now. Seventy six acres of  undeveloped land along the Saco river is being preserved to ensure that the public will have access to this land forever.  On November 6th the citizens of Hollis approved a warrant authorizing the town to commit $250,000 towards the purchase of this property.  With the help of the Trust for Public Land the town has until July of 2008 to raise the neccesary funds to purchase this parcel. There’s a wonderful web site with amazing photos that you should check out.  www.indiancellar.com
